Admiral Mountbatten addresses the crew of the USS Saratoga in joint maneuver with the British Fleet off Ceylon. USS Saratoga. 1944.

Miller was a member of the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit, under the command of Captain Edward Steichen. He was given orders to "photograph at will”. Between 1943 and 1945 Miller worked from various aircraft carriers, including USS Saratoga, USS Ticonderoga, and USS Nassau. He photographed kamikaze attacks, SBD (Scout Bomber Douglas) missions, as well as daily life aboard the aircraft carriers. Miller and Steichen developed a strong friendship that persisted until Steichen's death in 1973.
